Hell Hole Gorge is best accessed from the township of Adavale, a tiny community of around 25 people. It has a long fascinating history, and around 1900, was home to 2500 people. Times change, the newly built railroad in 1917 bypassed Adavale, choosing Quilpie instead, and the need for the community dwindled.

Hell Hole Gorge National Park is 69km north-west of Adavale (256km north-west of Charleville, 189km north of Quilpie) via unsealed roads. Head from Adavale towards Blackall, taking the Milo-Gooyea Road at the crossroads and following the signs to the park. Roads within the park follow old seismic lines and boundary fences.

Notable waterholes are the Hell Hole Waterhole (0.38 hectares) and Spencer's Waterhole (0.22 hectares).
